Evoked potentials to laterally presented stimuli were collected from left and right tempero-parietal sites during performance of two visual half-field tasks, lexical decision, and line orientation discrimination. Reaction time and accuracy data were simultaneously collected. The behavioral data indicated the development of a right field advantage for the lexical decision task as a function of practice. A principal components analysis revealed three independent evoked potential components which displayed task-dependent hemispheric asymmetries. Multiple regression analyses revealed that visual half-field asymmetries in response accuracy were closely related to hemispheric asymmetries on several independent evoked response components. Subject's scores on independent tests of verbal reasoning and spatial relations were also found to be closely related to hemispheric asymmetry on several independent evoked response components. These data support a multidimensional concept of cerebral specialization. They also suggest that visual field asymmetries reflect the confluence of several underlying processes which have independent lateralization distributions across the population. In general, the results underscore the need for further research on the nature of the relationship between cerebral and perceptual asymmetries.

The study investigated whether inefficient interhemispheric communication is involved in developmental dyslexia using multiple tasks. A finger localization task, rhyming judgment task, primed lexical decision task, and a visual half-field presentation paradigm were used. Nineteen dyslexic children (mean age = 13.1 years) were compared with 26 chronological age-matched normal children. Although the dyslexic group demonstrated significantly slower and less accurate performance in all three tasks, there was no significant group difference in term of interhemispheric communication. However, priming effects demonstrated by the dyslexic group (p < .05) further indicate that their reading problems may stem from the word retrieval process from the long term memory.

Hemispheric predominance has been well documented in the visual perception of alphabetic words. However, the hemispheric processing of lexical information in Chinese character recognition and its relationship to reading performance are far from clear. In the divided visual field paradigm, participants were required to judge the orthography, phonology, or semantics of Chinese characters, which were presented randomly in the left or right visual field. The results showed a right visual field/left hemispheric superiority in the phonological judgment task, but no hemispheric advantage in the orthographic or semantic task was found. In addition, reaction times in the right visual field for phonological and semantic tasks were significantly correlated with the reading test score. These results suggest that both hemispheres involved in the orthographic and semantic processing of Chinese characters, and that the left lateralized phonological processing is important for Chinese fluent reading.

Is there a preferred hemispheric canonical view of a concept? We investigated this question in a natural superordinate category membership decision task using a hemifield paradigm. Participants had to decide whether or not an image of an object lateralized in the left (LVF) or right (RVF) visual half-field is a member of a predesignated superordinate category. The objects represented high, medium, or low typicality levels, and each object had six different perspective views (front, front-right, front-left, side, back-left, and back-right). The latency responses revealed a significant interaction of Hemi Field X View X Typicality (there wasno hemifield difference in accuracy). The findings confirm the presence of asymmetry in stored concepts in long-term memory and suggest, in addition, a hemispheric canonical view of these concepts, a view strongly related to typicality level.

The present study was conducted to examine hemispheric division of labor in the initial processing and error monitoring in tasks for which hemispheric specialization exists. We used lexical decision as a left hemisphere task and bargraph judgment as a right hemisphere task, and manipulated cognitive load. Participants had to respond to one of two stimuli presented to both visual fields and were instructed to correct their errors. To achieve enough correctable errors, participants were encouraged to respond quickly by using a bonus system. The results showed the classical asymmetry for initial responses in both tasks and reversed asymmetry for corrections in the bargraph task at both load conditions, and in the lexical decision task at the high load condition. The results suggest that each hemisphere monitors the ongoing process in the contralateral one and that the dissociation of initial process and its monitoring grows with load of task.

This study was designed to examine whether the developmental course of visual hemispheric asymmetry is affected by task load and whether gender differences occur with age. Three experiments were performed according to the additive structure of reaction time: “go/no-go” task, “choice-reaction-time” task, and “category-sort” task. Children in three different age groups (7- to 8-years, 10 years, and 13 year olds) were presented lists of words using a visual half-field procedure. Results revealed that in the go/no-go task (Experiment 1), left hemispheric superiority for processing of word stimuli was evident at all three developmental ages, but no gender differences appeared. However, in the choice-reaction-time task (Experiment 2), and the category-sort task (Experiment 3), left hemispheric superiority was displayed by 7- to 8- and 10-year-old males, but not by 13-year-old males. In contrast, girls did not show the left hemispheric advantage at any of the developmental ages. It was concluded that visual hemispheric asymmetry exists in children at an early age, but the magnitude of asymmetry is dependent on age, gender, and task load.

Right-handed subjects participated in a visual half-field experiment using “clock” stimuli. For the Categorical task, subjects indicated whether the long and short hands of a clock were above or below the horizontal midline of the dial. For the Coordinate task, they indicated whether the long and short hands of a clock formed an angle that is more or less than 60°. For both tasks, clock stimuli were either analog clocks (Visual version) or digital clocks from which subjects generated images of analog clocks (Imagery version). The results indicated that for both the Visual and Imagery versions, there was a nonsignificant trend toward a left hemisphere advantage in the Categorical task, whereas there was a significant right hemisphere advantage in the Coordinate task. Implications of the results were discussed from the viewpoints of task factors in hemispheric processing of visual imagery, Kosslyn's (1987, 1994) computational model of vision and visual imagery, and vision/imagery isomorphism.

This study examined the hypothesis that characteristic individual differences in cerebral hemisphere arousal asymmetry are related to individual differences in perceptual asymmetry observed in verbally based visual half-field tasks. The study used electrophysiological measures of arousal asymmetry rather than behaviorally derived measures (Levy, Heller, Banich, & Burton, 1983). Measures of alpha asymmetry were obtained from 20 right-handed males during a baseline relaxation condition and during a visual half-field version of the lexical decision task. Reaction time measures of perceptual asymmetry were obtained during this task. The results indicated that a basal arousal asymmetry measured at the temporal recording location during the baseline condition was significantly related to individual perceptual asymmetry during the subsequent lexical decision task. This basal arousal asymmetry was relatively stable across different task conditions. A task-related arousal asymmetry measured at the parietal location during the lexical decision task also made a significant contribution in predicting individual perceptual asymmetry. These two measures of individual arousal asymmetry were able to predict 50% of the variance in perceptual asymmetry. The implications of the results for explaining more wide-ranging individual differences in behavioral style and personality are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate hemispheric functional asymmetry in 18 normal hearing children and 18 congenitally deaf children aged 13-14 years. The task was identification of a visual stimulus (3-letter word or photograph of a face) presented in either the left or right visual field. The children responded by pointing to the target stimulus on a response card which contained four different words or three different faces. The percentage of errors for presentations to the two visual fields were analysed to determine hemispheric dominance. The pattern of hemispheric differences for the hearing children was consistent with that from previous investigations. The results for the deaf children differed from those of the normals. In word perception we observed a right hemisphere advantage and in the face recognition a lack of hemispheric differences. These results point to a lack of auditory experiences which is affecting the functional organization of the two hemispheres. It is suggested that the necessity to make use of visuo-spatial information in the process of communication causes right hemisphere dominance in verbal tasks. This may influence the perception of other visuo-spatial stimuli which may yield a lack of hemispheric asymmetry in face recognition.
