The Attitudes towards Humor of Confucian,Buddhist, and Taoist Culture

As the three mainstreams of traditional Chinese culture, Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism hold different views towards humor. The attitude towards humor is equivocal in Confucian culture：on the one hand, they believe humor is inferior as it can impact a solemn person to be not serious,on the other hand,they admit people would be more humane with a humor heart. Positively, Buddhist culture regards humor as a manifestation of wisdom. Taoism is the philosophy which puts a high value on humor. Both Taoism＇s core ideas and the means of expression reflect the light of humor. By academically carding the attitudes in the three cultures, the humor couht be promoted and can play a more active role in the current life of Chinese.
