Abstract:It is argued that fear and avoidance can co-vary, vary inversely or vary independently. The consequences of this statement for therapeutic theory and practice are discussed. A critical comment on two-factor theory is followed by a discussion of two alternative theories, one proposed by Gray and the other by Herrnstein. Definitions of concordance, discordance, synchrony and desynchrony are offered.
