The Experimental Dissociation Between Tasks of Implicit and Explicit Memory: the Roles of Encoding Degrees and Retrieval Requests

The performances in the two tasks of implicit and explicit memory are compared by manipulating encoding degrees ( Experiment 1) and retrieval requests (Experiment 2). The results showed that the tendency of mutual restrain existed between semantic and non-semantic processing during the encoding; the more involvement of consciousness during retrieval, the more retrieval of semantic components from prior episodes resulted in, while this kind of involvement did not affect the retrieval of non-semantic components. The author thinks that there are interactions between encoding degrees and retrieval requests.
