Abstract:Verbal paired-associates (PA) tasks were used to determine the specific effects of transfer for normal children and retardates matched on mental age. The degree of item similarity between original learning and transfer learning was varied. Performance of the children conformed to that previously observed with normal children. The retardates showed marked departure with respect to the C-B and A-Br conditions. A stage analysis was used to separate the response learning and associative hookup phases of PA learning. Results suggested the importance of the response phase in predicting differences between normal and retardate performances in some aspects of PA transfer learning. The relatively great negative transfer displayed by the retardates under the A-Br condition is attributable to associative interference.
