Abstract:As evolution proceeds, natural selection operates to preserve adaptive phenotypes. The adaptive phenotypes are produced during the course of individual development. Thus, natural selection favors animals that have had a particular developmental history, including, but not restricted to, their genes. This point is demonstrated by the importance of normally occurring embryonic sensory stimulation in the development of instinctive perception in two species of ducklings.
