Abstract: | Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the successive state epochs following feeding on the motor and cardiac reactivity of 3-day-old human newborns. In the first experiment 19 subjects were examined using a 75 dB auditory stimulus. In the second experiment 16 subjects were used with an 85 dB stimulus. It was found that the reactivity of the newborn was dependent on the state of the subject and upon prandial condition, stimulus intensity, and the response parameter measured. All four factors have, therefore, to be taken into account before any general statement concerning neonatal reactivity can be made. |
