Abstract:Human speech encodes both referential and affective information, but evidence for a similar phenomenon in animal vocalizations has been lacking. Recent work on suricates, an African mongoose, shows that animal alarm calls simultaneously encode information about both predator type and the signaler's perception of urgency.
