When the Analyst Suffers Illness and Loss

This paper describes my struggle to retain my personal and professional identity while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. It would have been easy to slip into being “the tumor in the left breast.” A circumscribed writing project helped, since writing has always been part of my life. Some interactions with patients in treatment were also crucial to my sense of ongoing personhood.
