5. Quantitative Analyses

Abstract:ABSTRACT Chapter 5 presents quantitative analyses that examine Morgan longitudinally over the course of the circumnavigation. Variables include cognitive function, daily progress, affective dimensions (Valence and Activation), motives (Achievement, Power, Affiliation-Intimacy, and Intimacy), as well as broader concerns or psychodevelopmental stages (Identity, Intimacy, and Generativity). The analyses test a variety of hypotheses that derive from the theoretical perspectives of the five-factor model (FFM) and the life-story model (LSM). Most broadly, the FFM predicts consistency and stability of functioning whereas the LSM broaches the possibility of change and distinguishes between two levels of the voyage–the external quest and the internal journey. We tested specific hypotheses, which concerned long-term trends of and cross-correlations between variables, through concomitant time series analysis. Collectively, the quantitative results not only inform but also constrain the qualitative analyses of subsequent chapters.
