Abstract: | Abstract The importance of the initial interview as an essential evaluative and therapeutic tool has been much discussed in the literature. Unfortunately, the variety of theoretical approaches as well as evaluative concepts can often seem confusing and overwhelming to the beginning psychotherapist. The purpose of this paper is to describe a comprehensive, integrative model for the initial interview. Essential theoretical constructs which encompass intrapsychic, intergenerational and interactional approaches are defined. These constructs are synthesized in a manner which transcends various theoretical models offering a more manageable, comprehensive framework in which to conduct an interview. The importance of considering therapist behaviors which promote engagement are also discussed. |
