| Institution: | AVISHAI MARGALIT is Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His most recent book is The Decent Society (Harvard, 1996), and his current interests include the philosophy of language, the theory of rationality, social philosophy, and the philosophy of religion. This is his first appearance in Philosophy &Public Affairs;GABRIEL MOTZKIN is Senior Lecturer in History, Philosophy, and German Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the author of Time and Transcendence: Secular History, the Catholic Reaction, and the Rediscovery of the Future (Kluwer, 1992), and is writing a book on memory and perception.
