Abstract:The effects of exposure to noise stress were assessed in a group of chronic-headache sufferers. In migraine sufferers, exposure under optimal conditions (relaxation) was potent in reducing pain behaviour, while avoidance of exposure to potent stimuli led to increasing intolerance and decreased sensitivity. Depression was found to be an important mediating factor. Migrainers were found to be more affected by relaxation than tension headache cases. Tension headache cases did not show these effects. The functional similarity of anxiety and pain was pointed out. Psychologists working on pain management may well benefit from exploiting such similarities in developing and devising methods of modifying chronic pain.
