Anticipatory avoidance learning in the treatment of alcoholism: a record of therapeutic failure

An account is given of the application to alcoholism of the technique of anticipatory avoidance learning previously used with success in the treatment of homosexuality. The results of the treatment of four alcoholic patients are described together with data on response latencies and pulse rate changes. Treatment was unsuccessful in all four cases. The reasons for this are briefly discussed.
