Aesthetic Modernity and the Criticism of Everyday Life

While traditional art has a function of harmonizing society and its people, modernist art seems to object to the traditional function of art. Based on the conflict of the Enlightenment modernity and aesthetic modernity, the article focuses upon the tensions between modernist art and everyday life in the capitalist society. The author indicates that the tensions between modernist art and everyday life have a lot of variants in modern aesthetics. There is a cultural logic from aestheticism through Frankfurt School to structuralism that modernist art on the one hand maintains their autonomy and the Utopian through the negation of everyday life, on the other hand, it radically criticizes the ideologies of everyday life by distancing from the everyday life.
