At the same time there is a resistance to deal with this phenomenon, since it necessitates a careful countertransference-analysis. The meaning of the missed session follows some thoughts about the theory of the process and the frame of the psychoanalytic treatment. The starting point of the vacancy rule is Freuds definition. The continuity of the process, which is expressed by the reliable succession of the sessions, is the central idea. A vacancy rule is proposed, which takes into account the continuity of the process as well as the responsibility of the analyst and the patient for the process. Modifications of the vacancy rule and the most common objections are discussed.
