A note on a seventeenth-century distinction between feral man and man-like apes

A critical examination of a passage from a text by Athanasius Kircher in 1667 indicates that a distinction between feral man and man-like apes had been made on lines compatible with contemporary views almost a century before Linnaeus produced a classification which led to many years of controversy.
