Abstract: | A disproportionate number of American Jewish and Israeli-born public intellectuals, including theorists such as Michael Walzer and Yael Tamir, have played a significant role in mapping the parameters of what it means to be a citizen and part of a particular ethnic or national group today. Many of these theorists share an interest in challenging the dominant nationalist outlook by articulating the moral and practical case for minority ethnic, national, and religious groups. While scholars of Jewish studies have long left public intellectuals who happen to be Jewish outside the parameters of the field, this study suggests expanding Jewish political thought to consider the connection between Jewish interests and mainstream theories of nationalism and multiculturalism. |
