Freud’s ?Project for a Scientific Psychology“ was written in 1895, the year that gave birth to the cinema as well as to Henri Bergsons’ philosophy of time. One of its central features is the ?Period“ as the temporal shape of perceptions. It is the first temporally dynamic concept of psychic functioning. The paper links this crucial concept, which has been forgotten in psychoanalysis, with findings from developmental psychology (rhythm shaping in early dialogue), neurobiology (temporal discrimination), and sociology (temporal aspects of complex logistics) and proposes a temporal metapsychology.
