Causality in naturally occurring computational systems

Abstract:Some recent results from the study of chaotic and complex dynamical systems are invoked to assess the status of causality as it applies to naturally occurring computational systems. The evidence would support Bunge's concept of general determinism and therefore the doctrine of semicausalism. A foundation of statistical determinism must be supplemented with other notions such as interactive, emergent, contextual and structural determinism. These forms of determinism are both noncausal and nonreductionist. Contextual factors play a prominent role. Thus the likelihood of finding general methods for the prediction and control of NOCS is low.
