A Review of the Research on the Critical Period in Second Language Acquisition

The critical period in language acquisition is an important and controversial issue in developmental psychology. In the recent twenty years, many researchers explored the relation between age of acquisition (AOA) and the learning speed in second language, the ultimate level in second language, and the cerebral representation for second language. They got complex results. In future research variables related to age and cognitive variables must be controlled and the research on behaviors and brain functions must be combined in order to explore the issue thoroughly.
