Abstract: | This article presents a concrete, systematic approach to treating the adolescent based upon a sound theoretical understanding of this developmental period, and knowledge of how adolescents behave in therapy and in life. The various procedures essential to engaging the patient in therapy are highlighted in light of the intense adolescent struggle between seeking total independence or autonomy and being attracted to dependency on early love objects. Issues of assessment, goal-setting, the importance of attachment, acceptance, and a general adolescent-sensitive set of procedures are discussed. |
