Aloofness and Empathy of the Doctor

Aloofness is the inherent claim of doctor's vocation; Empathy is external character of medical ethic. Moderate aloofness assures the authority of doctor but excess aloofness will lead to occupational apathy. Appropriate empathy shows responsibility and solicitude to patient, whereas immoderate empathy may induce burnout thereby resulting in emotional apathy. In order to facilitate harmonious doctor-patient relationship, it is important to understand nature of aloofness and empathy as well as balance between aloofness and empathy. This paper will explore the nature character of doctor's aloofness and empathy while some suggestions balancing between aloofness and empathy are discussed.
