Abstract: | A model of form perception is proposed, based on the concept that shape properties can be assessed by the measurement of the dimensions of a form, taken at regular intervals over several directions in a grid of lines. These measurements are then collected into a frequency distribution, which serves as a translationally invariant summary of shape properties for purposes of perceptual judgment. The present article illustrates the basic approach using simple convex forms, with primary emphasis on grid properties and the plausibility of the model with respect to biological substrates. |
