Abstract: | Sociology could profit considerably from new research attention to oral sexuality. Data from current large‐scale postal surveys suggests a substantial increase in the number of Americans who include fellatio and cunnilingus in their sexual experience. Small‐scale intensive interview research, however, raises serious doubts about whether usage is always accompanied by satisfaction gains: long‐standing ambivalence and social taboos undermine attitudinal reforms. The mass media focuses unprecedented attention on the subject, but considerable contradictory opinions persist about it. Research possibilities are suggested, as is a case for sustained, systematic research. |
