Medical Professionalism and Confidentiality:Historical and Current Conflicts in the United States

To discuss the efforts of Departments of Health in United States to promulgate and enforce mandatory reporting laws,the tensions between mandatory reporting regulations and the principles of medical professionalism and personal autonomy,the strategies that private physicians devised to avoid complying with the regulations,the strategies patients and their advocates devised to avoid compulsory registration and testing and the compromises that were reached between physicians/patients and public health officials.To conclude with recommendations for public health policies that recognizes the challenges inherent in mandatory reporting and the importance of transparency in health policy.
