Abstract: | This study was designed to determine the effects of having college residence hall floors numerically dominated by students with similar academic majors and the effects of a program of intellectual discussions held on the residence hall floors. Freshman room assignments were arranged so that the ratio of science students to humanities students was 4 to 1 on two floors of a residence hall and the ratio of humanities students to science students was 4 to 1 on two other floors. On two floors a series of intellectual discussions was held. The dominance of a vocational group had a significant impact on feelings about college major, satisfaction with college, and social interaction. The discussion program had a significant effect upon intellectual attitudes and activities. |
