Abstract: | Two test construction efforts to eliminate sex bias in interest measurement at the item level were compared, the Vocational Interest Inventory and the Unisex version of the ACT Interest Inventory. In both cases, despite careful item selection based on approximately equal proportions of the sexes endorsing alternatives, sex-restrictive results occurred, i.e., women preferred the Service and Artistic areas, and men the Technical, Outdoor, and Scientific areas. The biggest challenge to reducing sex bias in interest tests appears to be women's attraction to People and aversion to Things. |
