Calibration of an eye-movement system for use in reading

A method for measuring horizontal eye movements in the msec range is described. Accurate measurement of horizontal eye movement over a linear range of 12° is achieved by processing the image of the eye illuminated with infrared light and with the head position fixed. The system has given very reliable results, and a resolution of 6 min of visual angle can be achieved with a character space of 45 min of arc. We also describe efficient numerical-data processing which allows the precise determination of the absolute position of the eye.
