Abstract: | This ethnographic study researched the perceptions of mate selection for marriage and the decisions of college‐educated, African American mothers who bore children while single. Twenty‐five senior‐level African American students who attended a college in New York City participated in the study. There has been a significant change in the family life‐cycle stage of coupling and marriage for these women because of their lived experiences. |
