Abstract: | A new concept for counselor role and function that emphasizes action and community involvement is emerging from the press of current social issues. Some resistance is expressed by counselors being trained in the traditional psychological model, derived from 19th century concepts of help-giving with emphasis on problem-centered, one-to-one relationships. That approach is rejected as uneconomic and ineffective in allocating counseling skills. An alternative educational model is proposed that would allocate counseling resources to groups and programs, and to the development and direction of improvements in the learning environment. |
