Abstract:Research has shown that in right-handers there is a preference for stimulus objects which draw one's attention toward the right. It was hypothesized that when one's gaze was directed toward the right, one would give a more positive evaluation of photographs which were placed in the line of vision than would others who looked at the same photographs while their gaze was directed leftward. Using 60 subjects, the hypothesis was confirmed for males but not females. This finding was discussed as providing an explanation for the previous preference research, based on an assumption of left hemisphere processing of positive affect. It also demonstrates the value of the manipulation of attentional orientation as a methodology for studying cerebral asymmetry.
