Abstract: | With difficult patients who seek to engage the analyst through struggle rather than through warm connection, analysts struggle whether to interpret or contain. I use Cooper's case example to consider these two initial treatment approaches. I argue for the approach that is most difficult for all analysts—to let the patient be himself guiding us toward what he does and does not need. |
