Abstract: | Feelings, behaviour and support needs of students working on student 'Nightline' services in the UK and Portugal were investigated, using questionnaires and verbal reports. Students awaiting calls were both apprehensive yet eager; suicide calls were the most stressful, and hoax calls caused concern. The first response after a call was to talk to their partner on the shift; this immediate peer support appears crucial in handling stress and distress. Responses from both countries were similar, except that the Portuguese were more likely to engage in formal relaxation techniques; the inclusion of these in UK training may be advantageous. |
