The Relationship Between Surface Acting and Deep Acting:Evidence from Meta-analysis

A meta-analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between the surface acting and deep acting,both of which are components of emotional labor strategies.A total of 162 independent samples(N=63629)from 150 articles meet the standard for further analysis.Results showed that surface acting and deep acting were positively related.The test of moderating effect suggested that the response format of scales,measuring instrument,and the vocational type significantly moderated the relationship between surface acting and deep acting.Specifically,when the response format was by frequency,the relationship between surface acting and deep acting was stronger than that by degree.When using the scale developed by Brotheridge and Lee(2003),the correlation between surface acting and deep acting was higher than the scales of Grandey(2003)and Diefendorff et al.(2005).The relationship between surface acting and deep acting in caring professions was significantly higher than that in commercial service professions.Research methods had no significant moderating effect on the relationship between surface acting and deep acting.These results provide implications for studying of the theory and measurement of emotional labor.
