The Influence of Inhibition of Return on the Storage and Goal Maintenance in Working Memory

By Combining the cue-target paradigm in the research o f inhibition of return (IOR) with N-Back variation in the studies of working memory, the presen t study investigated the relationship between IOR and the storage and processing of working memory, and further examined the mechanisms underlying IOR. The resul ts showed that there occurred significantly more errors of both kinds when worki ng memory targets were presented at cued location than when presented at uncued location. But the inhibitory effect of intruding errors was substantial only on condition of longer SOA. The study discloses that IOR has an influence not only on the storage but also on the goal maintenance of working memory; meanwhi le it provides new evidence in favor of the attentional view on the mechanisms o f IOR.
