Abstract:The existence of a general factor of conditionability is implicit in theories such as those of Pavlov (1955) and Eysenck (1957) but no satisfactory evidence has been produced to support this concept. In the present study galvanic skin responses and penile volume responses were studied in two dissimilar conditioning procedures. It was found that a significant positive relationship existed within each response system between conditioned response amplitude in the two conditioning procedures. However, no consistent relationships were found between conditioned response amplitude across response systems.Conditioning efficiency was measured in terms of work ratio, i.e. the proportion of the total response achieved by the conditioned response at the moment of unconditioned stimulus onset. Significant positive relationships were found between work ratio measures of conditioning across response systems in the same and in different conditioning procedures. The findings lend support to the concept of a general factor of conditionability.
