Abstract:This article explores the process of reconstituting Jewish communities and redefining Jewish identity in post-Holocaust Germany through an analysis of the work of Karl Marx and Dr Hendrik G. van Dam, the two principle Jewish communal leaders. It also pays special attention to their role in the larger constellation of West-German politics during the 1960s.
