Class as a Construct in a "Classless" Society
Abstract:This article addresses the failures and inadequacies of current approaches to dealing with class as an issue in psychological theory and psychotherapy. Using a deconstructive framework, many factors associated with class definitions are identified. The goal is to draw attention to the issues surrounding these differences without promoting a reductionistic or formulaic framework. The article calls for the development of new language to address the diversities of class without sanctioning the hierarchical framework upon which out understanding of class and class divisions rest. Additionally, practical concerns for the psychotherapist wishing to deal with the diversity of class are addressed.
