Videotape feedback as a therapeutic technique: retrospect and prospect

The general aim of this paper is to evaluate the present use and status of videotape feedback as a therapeutic technique, and to suggest some guidelines for future development. An attempt is made to answer five questions. What are the practical steps involved in the use of VTR feedback as a therapeutic measure? What are the main clinical applications? What is the current status of feedback as a validated therapy? Is it possible to specify the main areas of future development? In the section on future developments, an attempt is made to specify the questions which need to be answered, to make suggestions about research design and to discuss the mechanisms and variables which might account for any behavioural change which is associated with feedback.
