Abstract: | An analysis of the structural and defensive aspects of the self-righteous personality has been presented. Some genetic factors leading to the development of such a personality were considered. Analysis indicated that introjection of the idealized, righteous parent and identification with this introject was motivated by the need for narcissistic supplies. Fusion with this introject occurs during outbursts of self-righteous indignation directed towards an object cathected to a great extent with narcissistic libido. For the unconscious of the patient such an object represents in large measure the repressed aspects of his devalued self-representation. Some dynamic constellations encountered during treatment have been described. |
