The basic therapeutic considerations underlying the establishment of an in-patient department for the treatment of alcoholic cases at district level are set forth, and the advantages and disadvantages of the move are discussed. In practice, in-hospital treatment of alcoholic cases at district level has been shown to be justified in the creation of a locally self-contained therapeutic chain.
