Lessons from Recent Development of Western Spinal Manipulative Therapy

Spinal manipulative therapy （SMT） is very popular for thousands of years in the east and west as well. It has been used to treat the patients suffering from degenerative disease of spinal column. SMT has been primarily and systematically developed only about half century in the west and still not yet fully reorganized by modern medicine. It is rather difficult for a therapy of empirical medicine to be approved by modern science, although many well--organized scientific reseat ches have already disclosed some basic mechanism of SMT. The paper reviewed the history and recent development of spinal manipulative therapy in the west, which reflects the reason of why that SMT can not be totally accepted by modern medicine in the west and what lessons we should learn from it.
