Abstract:From a theoretical viewpoint which emphasized both the emotive and cognitive components of a smile, it was derived that it is important to study smile magnitude as physically measurable overt facial patterning. Two experiments involving many measurements from six adult Ss were presented. The first dealt with the functional relationship between subjectively (kinesthetically) determined linearly equidistant smile magnitudes and a set of physical measurements, such as mouth width, indicative of changes in smile magnitude. The second study dealt with how well Ss can judge the photographed smile magnitudes of themselves and others. It was found that smile magnitude expressed as overt facial patterning is a lawful phenomenon that can be quantified and studied with precision.
