Abstract: | In a former study, isolation-by-material was examined while matching total-list item difficulty and while minimizing the confounding influence of response-learning requirements through the use of a reconstruction procedure. The distinctiveness of a discrepantly difficult member of a trigram series was verified. In order to complement that study, a discrepantly high-AV trigram appeared either at the beginning or near the middle of a 12-item series. Results from a reconstruction procedure provided no evidence for an isolation effect, but a second study in which a substantial task requirement for response learning was imposed through the use of the anticipation procedure showed massive effects. Implications concerning item distinctiveness and isolation effects were mentioned. |
