Quantum mechanics (QM) is a favorite area of physics to feature in “science and religion” discussions. We argue that this is at least partly because the arcane results of QM can be deployed to make big theological claims by the linguistic sleight of hand of “register switching”—sliding imperceptibly from technical into everyday language using the same vocabulary. We clarify the discussion by deploying the formal mapping of QM into classical statistical mechanics (CSM) via the mathematical device of “Wick rotation.” This equivalence between QM and CSM suggests caution in claiming distinctiveness for quantum theologizing. After outlining two areas in which quantum insights nevertheless resonate with longstanding themes in theological reflection (hiddenness and visualizability), we suggest that both QM and CSM point to a theology of science in which scientists participate in the divine gaze on creation as imago Dei. 相似文献

We introduce the notion of quantum MV algebra (QMV algebra) as a generalization of MV algebras and we show that the class of all effects of any Hilbert space gives rise to an example of such a structure. We investigate some properties of QMV algebras and we prove that QMV algebras represent non-idempotent extensions of orthomodular lattices.I should like to thank Prof. M.L. Dalla Chiara and Dr. P. Standard quantum mechanics unquestionably violates the separability principle that classical physics (be it point-like analytic,
statistical, or field-theoretic) accustomed us to consider as valid. In this paper, quantum nonseparability is viewed as a
consequence of the Hilbert-space quantum mechanical formalism, avoiding thus any direct recourse to the ramifications of Kochen-Specker’s
argument or Bell’s inequality. Depending on the mode of assignment of states to physical systems – unit state vectors versus
non-idempotent density operators – we distinguish between strong/relational and weak/deconstructional forms of quantum nonseparability.
The origin of the latter is traced down and discussed at length, whereas its relation to the all important concept of potentiality
in forming a coherent picture of the puzzling entangled interconnections among spatially separated systems is also considered.
Finally, certain philosophical consequences of quantum non-separability concerning the nature of quantum objects, the question
of realism in quantum mechanics, and possible limitations in revealing the actual character of physical reality in its entirety

Thermodynamics is the foundation of many of the topics of interest in the religion-science dialogue. Here a nonmathematical outline of the principles of thermodynamics is presented, providing a historical and conceptually understandable development that can serve teachers from disciplines other than physics. The contributions of Gibbs to both classical and rational thermodynamics, emphasizing the importance of the ensemble in statistical mechanics, are discussed. The seminal ideas of Boltzmann on statistical mechanics are contrasted to those of Gibbs in a discussion of the microscopic interpretation of the second law. The role of information theory is discussed, and the modern ideas of Prigogine and nonequilibrium are outlined in some detail with further reference to the second law.
