Existence and the existential quantifier

This paper draws a distinction between the existential quantifier and the symbol ‘∃’ used to express it, on the one hand, and existence and ‘exists’, on the other. It argues that some popular arguments in metaphysics, including arguments against vague existence and arguments against deflationary metaontology (which views ontological disputes as lacking substance), are guilty of fudging this distinction. The paper draws some lessons for metaphysical debate about existence and highlights some heretofore ignored and attractive positions in logical space.

Vagueness,Kant and Topology: a Study of Formal Epistemology

In this paper we propose an approach to vagueness characterised by two features. The first one is philosophical: we move along a Kantian path emphasizing the knowing subject’s conceptual apparatus. The second one is formal: to face vagueness, and our philosophical view on it, we propose to use topology and formal topology. We show that the Kantian and the topological features joined together allow us an atypical, but promising, way of considering vagueness.     

On Vagueness,Truth Values and Fuzzy Logics

Indeterminacy,identity and counterparts: Evans reconsidered

In this paper I argue that Gareth Evans’ famous proof of the impossibility of de re indeterminate identity fails on a counterpart-theoretic interpretation of the determinacy operators. I attempt to motivate a counterpart-theoretic reading of the determinacy operators and then show that, understood counterpart-theoretically, Evans’ argument is straightforwardly invalid.     

Relevance and argumentation: How bald can you get

This paper is concerned with vagueness in language, its relation to logico-philosophical questions on the one hand, and to so-called syncategorematic terms and their linguistic use on the other hand. It attempts to show that it is not language itself which is vague but rather the way we use it.     

Spectral factors in the perception of vowel quantity in Icelandic

Previous research has shown that the ratio of vowel to rhyme (vowel + consonant) duration is a major cue for quantity in Icelandic. In particular it serves as a higher-order invariant which enables the listener to disentangle those durational transformations of the speech signal which are "extrinsic" (e. g. due to changes in speaking rate) from those which are "intrinsic" to the phonemic message, involving a change of phonemic quantity. Previous research has been based on speech segment contrasts which are purely durational, involving vowels with a uniform spectrum whether phonemically long or short, such as [a] or [I]. This paper looks at the role of spectral factors in vowels which are spectrally dissimilar in their long and short varieties. It is shown that in these cases the spectral differences can be sufficiently great to override the previously established relational invariant for quantity. The implications of this finding for a model of quantity perception are discussed.     

A Negationless Interpretation of Intuitionistic Theories. II

This work is a sequel to our [16]. It is shown how Theorem 4 of [16], dealing with the translatability of HA(Heyting's arithmetic) into negationless arithmetic NA, can be extended to the case of intuitionistic arithmetic in higher types.
