The indifferent
This article presents a portrait of indifference, a psychosocial analysis of middle class bystanding of social suffering. It arises as a way to tell a research story of colonially produced racism, classism, and denial. Together, these ways of being produce a mode of perception that denies reality, an active erasure that makes the indifferent apathetic. It is based on research in postcolonial Jamaica, yet some of its features can be recognized elsewhere, where bystanders bury their witness, their insight, concealing their understanding of other’s pain. Because this portrait is based on what male and female research participants said, “he/she” are used interchangeably throughout the portrait.  相似文献

This article addresses the connection between religion, culture and the family through a critical examination of evangelical Christians’ focus on ‘the family’ in Barbados, in 2015 and 2016. The intentions are to highlight Evangelical Christians’ strategic deployment of a common rhetoric or frame of ‘defending the family,’ which was put forward in public discourses relating to sex, sexuality, marriage and the family. This rhetoric draws upon and reproduces deep-seated anxieties around the state of the family as well as its connection to ideas of progress, freedoms, national sovereignty and the establishment of strong nations. The article also sheds sociological light on Evangelical mobilisations by exploring the socio-cultural context in which they are occurring. The presented analysis is based on a critical feminist discourse analysis of relevant local and regional newspaper articles, blogs and websites, observational research as well as a review of secondary qualitative and quantitative data and pre-existing scholarly literature.  相似文献

The proposed list of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sets out to reframe development according to a more holistic perspective. Yet, drawing on the example of the need for sustainable, resilient and biodiverse agriculture, it is argued here that the SDGs remain essentially grounded within one cultural understanding of how to address poverty. At least with regard to agriculture, the SDGs thus remain mono-cultural, one-dimensional, overly technocratic, and are far from universal as they fail to acknowledge the stipulated alternative pluriverse, frequently understood in the Global South. The problem outlined is neither a technical nor political one: being essentially related to knowledge production it calls for the pluralization of approaches to both global ethics and sustainability.  相似文献

The concept of religion as an anthropological category and the idea of race as an organizing principle of human identification and social organization played a major role in the formation of modern/colonial systems of symbolic representation that acquired global significance with the expansion of Western modernity. The modern concepts of religion and race were mutually constituted and together became two of the most central categories in drawing maps of subjectivity, alterity, and sub‐alterity in the modern world. This makes the critical theory of religion highly relevant for the theory of race, and both of them crucial for ethics. It follows from this, not only that religion and race have been profoundly intertwined in modernity, but also that any ethics that seeks to take seriously the challenges created by modernity/coloniality has to be, at least to some extent, decolonial.  相似文献
