A longitudinal study of pain sensitivity and blood pressure in adolescent boys: results from a 5-year follow-up.

A growing literature has observed a significant reduction in pain sensitivity among hypertensive animals and humans. It is uncertain whether a reduced sensitivity to pain can be observed in nonnotensive individuals who go on to develop high blood pressure. Blood pressure (BP) was reassessed in one hundred fifteen 19-year-old boys initially tested at age 14, when they were also presented with a pain stimulus (mechanical finger pressure). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that information regarding pain tolerance improved prediction of changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure beyond that afforded by differences in BP at age 14, parental history of hypertension, and body mass index. These analyses suggest that pain sensitivity may be associated with physiological processes involved in the development of sustained high blood pressure.     

Characteristics of adolescents at risk for compulsive overeating on a brief screening test

As part of a large survey of addictive behavior in high school students, 43% of a sample of 278 (26% of the males, 57% of the females) scored above the cutoff point set by Overeaters Anonymous on their scale for assessing compulsive overeating. While this at-risk group did not report poorer general adjustment, health, or school achievement than did the students not at risk, they did significantly more often perceive their life quality and relationship with the person closest to them as less positive. The at-risk subsample indicated the defensive effectiveness of overeating in their significantly more frequent report of dissociative experiences while eating, and less severe ratings of insecurity, worrying, and daydreaming. One of the most salient findings was the at-risk students' more frequent report of addictive problems in their parents (overeating, alcohol and drug use, and gambling).     

Assessing Client Satisfaction with Mental Health Treatment among French-Canadians

La présente étude fournit des résultats à verser au dossier de validation de la version française "Client Satisfaction Questionnaire" (CSQ): une courte échelle en 18 items créée pour mesurer le degré de satisfaction de l'utilisation de différents aspects des services de santé mentale. L'échantillon comprenait 89 anciens patients (en secteur) d'une clinique psychologique universitaire. Les résultats montrent la fidélité et la validité factorielle du CSQ dans le contexte franco-canadien. De plus, comportant des similitudes avec les observations anglaises, espagnoles et hollandaises, ils représentent un important premier pas pour fonder l'équivalence inter-culturelle de la version franco-canadienne de l'échelle.
The present study provides data for the cross-cultural validity of the French version of the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ); a short 18-item scale which was designed to assess degree of satisfaction with different aspects of mental health services. The sample consisted of 89 former outpatients of a University Psychology Clinic. Results supported the reliability and factorial validity of the CSQ in a French-Canadian context. In addition, the results were similar to those observed for English, Spanish and Dutch versions and represent an important first step towards the cross-cultural equivalence of the French-Canadian version of the scale.
