Loneliness has been linked to emotional knowledge and interpersonal distrust, but it is unknown whether it is mediated or moderated by these variables. Using self‐report measures, the relationship between loneliness, interpersonal distrust, and alexithymia was investigated in undergraduate students (N = 224). Analyses showed a direct relationship between alexithymia and social, family, and romantic loneliness. We also found that interpersonal distrust partly mediates this relationship, and that alexithymia and interpersonal distrust interacted to predict social and family loneliness. These findings suggest that links between the different facets of alexithymia, interpersonal distrust, and loneliness are complex and multifaceted, and they are discussed with regard to interventions for young adults.  相似文献

Right-wing authoritarianism, stereotypes about illegal immigrants relative to legal immigrants (and nonimmigrants), and collective self-esteem were investigated as predictors of attitude toward California's Proposition 187—the 1994 initiative making illegal immigrants ineligible for public services. Among both Latinos (n= 92) and Caucasians (n= 79), right-wing authoritarianism and negative stereotypes about illegal immigrants predicted Proposition 187 support and reported vote. For Latinos, low collective self-esteem and high levels of acculturation predicted support and vote in favor of Proposition 187. In contrast, high collective self-esteem among Caucasians was related to Proposition 187 support and vote. The results suggest that 3 perspectives on prejudice—personality, cognitive, and cultural—contribute to the understanding of attitudinal and behavioral support of Proposition 187.  相似文献

This paper reviews three theoretical models of how prejudice affects the self-esteem of its targets. The stimulus-response model assumes that prejudice has a direct, negative effect on self-esteem. The stimulus-perception-response model recognises that perceptions of prejudice may not directly mirror experiences with prejudice, but predicts that the subjective perception of being a target of prejudice has a direct, negative effect on self-esteem. Both of these models are found to be inadequate. We propose a third, transactional model, which assumes that individuals do not respond in uniform way to being the target of prejudice. Rather, this model contends that self-esteem and emotional responses to prejudice are determined by cognitive appraisals of prejudicial events and coping strategies used in response to these events; these processes, in turn, are shaped by personal, situational, and structural factors. Experiments are presented showing that self-esteem in response to perceived prejudice is moderated by presence or absence of threats to personal identity, clarity of prejudices cues in the situation, ingroup identification, dispositional optimism, endorsement of legitimising ideologies, and group status. We argue that a transactional model of responses to prejudice emphasises sources of resistance as well as vulnerability among targets of prejudice.  相似文献

Disordered eating is linked to body shapes and images presented in the mass media. Favored celebrities may represent a particularly strong source of influence. We examined cross-sectional relationships between women's disordered eating and their perceptions of body-shape differences with favored celebrities. Women between the ages of 18 and 27 rated personal body shapes alongside those of self-selected favored celebrities. Multivariate analyses showed self/celebrity body-shape discrepancies to be linked to EAT-26 diet, bulimia, and oral control scales independent of personal body-shape and self/ideal discrepancies. For bulimia subscale scores, this relationship was moderated by a more favorable perception of the celebrity relative to the self. Celebrities might be important in creating an unrealistic social comparison standard that contributes to disordered eating.  相似文献

Groups of C57BL/6J mice were administred cycloheximide (CYC) 30 min before or immediately after training on a passive avoidance task and tested 72 hr later. Some CYC-pretreated groups were given strychnine or d-amphetamine (d-amp) immediately after training and others were given d-amp 1 hr after training. Other groups were given diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) at various times before or after training. Some DDC-pretreated groups were gived-amp or strychnine as described above for CYC groups. Immediate posttraining administration of 5 mg/kg d-amp, but not strychnine, prevented amnesia in CYC-pretreated mice. The DDC induced an apparent amnesia when administered from 30 min before training to 3 hr after training. Posttraining administration of d-amp or strychnine did not prevent DDC-induced amnesia. These results are discussed in relation to previous suggestions that CYC- and DDC-induced amnesia may be the result of a functional impairment of catecholamine neurotransmitter systems by these drugs.  相似文献

This paper argues that interactive mental processes in humans have a natural tendency to replay internally and cyclically, a typical example being the tunes that run ‘in our head’ for hours. The existence of these ‘internalized activities’ may be shown by both simple introspection and neurological experiments, which also reveal that they occur in all sensory modalities and involve everything from perception to more abstract activities. We will show that this hypothesis provides new ways to explain 1- how real activity is guided by similar internalized activities, 2- how goals are represented to an agent by persistent internalized activities, 3- how the pursuit of these goals subordinates other activities. We account for such internalized activities by means of the sorts of interactive processes described by the interactivist model, with a tendency, like that of Piaget schemes, to run cyclically, whenever possible. They are similar to real activities in that they draw on the same neural machinery, but their sensory-motor aspects are somehow inhibited. Not being enslaved to reality and its timing, they can run faster and in a discontinuous way. Multiple internalized processes may also co-occur with compatible sensory-motor operations, even though the latter are inhibited. When an activity is actually performed by an agent, we argue that a synchronization phenomenon makes previous similar activities run in an internalized way in parallel, and that they help to guide real activity by providing anticipated potentialities in real time. When we make a basketball shot, previous analogous shots run in internal synchrony at the same time, guiding the current attempt.A goal such as a successful shot can be initially present in the agent's mind as a persistent internalized activity. The tendency of internalized activities to run whenever possible allows for a sequence construction mechanism, which operates forward and backward, and permits the creation of sequences of internalized processes projecting from a current activity, such as dribbling against an opponent, to a goal activity, such as shooting. These ideas have been applied 1- to a computer program able to recognize musical rhythms by synchronizing actual rhythms to internalized ones, and 2- to the construction of a model of how an agent represents the routes it knows in a town and how these routes coordinate internally to produce sequences from a current location to a destination.  相似文献

This study examined group identification and situational ambiguity as moderators of attributions to discrimination and self-esteem following negative feedback. As predicted, high gender-identified women made more discrimination attributions than low identified women when situational prejudice cues were ambiguous, but not when prejudice cues were absent or overt. Also as predicted, women exposed to overt prejudice cues had higher self-esteem than those exposed to ambiguous cues or no prejudice cues. The relationship between discrimination attributions and self-esteem was positive among women exposed to overt prejudice but negative among those exposed to no prejudice. Across conditions, however, the more that women discounted ability as a cause of their negative feedback (i.e., blamed discrimination more than ability), the higher their self-esteem. Results qualify and extend prior research and demonstrate that personal and situational factors moderate both the tendency to make attributions to discrimination and the consequences of those attributions for self-esteem.  相似文献

Eating disorders are more common in females than in males and are believed to be caused, in part, by biological and hormonal factors. Digit ratio or 2D:4D (the ratio of the 2nd to the 4th digit) is considered to be a proxy for prenatal testosterone (PT) and prenatal oestrogen (PE) exposure. However, how 2D:4D may be related to type of eating pathology is unknown. The relationship between 2D:4D and eating disorder diagnosis was investigated in recovered and currently eating disordered (n = 31) and control (n = 99) women. Mean 2D:4D ratio was significantly lower (indicating higher levels of PT and lower levels of PE) in anorexic (AN) compared to bulimic (BN) women, with controls intermediary. In eating disordered women, 2D:4D was positively and significantly related to current weight, lowest weight and current BMI, with strongest associations for right 2D:4D. Among women, low 2D:4D is related to AN and high 2D:4D to BN, suggesting a differential causal influence of prenatal sex hormones on later eating pathology.  相似文献
